Pool Safety

While the Pool Guard pool safety fence is removable, we recommend pool fencing should never be removed when children are present. No pool safety product is ever a substitute for adult supervision, always supervise your swimming pool when children are present. The AAP notes that inadequate supervision is frequently a contributing factor to the drowning of young children. Adequate supervision includes close, constant supervision and, in the case of new swimmers, touch supervision, meaning an adult is within touch reach at all times in case a child’s head goes underwater. Any adult assigned to watch children around the pool should be familiar with the signs of drowning distress, it is not the flailing and yelling you see on TV and in the movies. Drowning is a silent event, and it is important to know the signs and how to properly respond. Finally, strong supervision is critical for the safety of children with ASD and other disabilities.

Here at Pool Guard, we take safety seriously and we are proud to be able to help you make your pool safe for children!

Best Practice Pool Safety Rules

  • Always have adult supervision – assign a water monitor.
  • Verify your swimming pool fencing is installed properly and that the pool gates are closed.
  • Keep your pool fencing in place – always. Only remove pool fencing for maintenance.
  • Keep your cell phone near the pool – but don’t be on it if you are the water monitor.
  • Teach all children to swim as early as possible.
  • Make sure your babysitters can swim – have them show you.
  • Never allow young children to dive into a pool.
  • At least one adult family member should know CPR.
  • Do not allow running on the edge of the pool.
  • Keep large floating toys out of the pool – they block the view.
  • Keep deck areas free of clutter.
  • Install pool lights for night vision.
  • Have a clear view of the pool from inside your home.
  • Remove automatic vacuums from the pool before swimming.
