Techko S187D Review

Doors and gates leading to a swimming pool can pose a safety risk, especially when young children are nearby. The Techko S187D helps address this concern by sounding an alarm when a monitored door, gate, or window opens. However, its effectiveness depends on proper installation, consistent use, and an adult being close enough to hear and respond.

This Techko S187D review covers how the alarm works, its key features, installation requirements, and everyday operation. It also examines Techko’s claims about meeting pool alarm safety standards and weighs the main pros and cons to help you decide whether the device suits your pool setup.

Techko S187D Review – The Short Verdict

For a household that wants an audible alert when a specific door, gate, or window opens, the S187D is a sensible, narrowly focused tool. It is a good match for a single, clearly defined access point where an adult is willing to use the bypass button.

Its defining limit is simple. It detects an opening, not someone entering the pool. It doesn’t detect a person in the water, send phone notifications, or record video. Anyone who reads it as a camera, a floating alarm, or a barrier substitute will be disappointed. Entry alarms address one access-control problem, but they don’t cover every pool hazard around the water.

What Does the Techko S187D Actually Do?

The Techko S187D is a magnetic-contact alarm that detects when a monitored door, gate, or window opens. When the magnet separates from the sensor, the siren activates. Its “always-on” design keeps it armed during normal operation, except during a temporary bypass.

Techko rates its six-tone siren at 110-115 dB, although the product description also specifies 110 dB. The alarm has an IP65 rating, providing protection against dust and water jets, but not submersion. It measures approximately 1.75 × 1.6 × 4.6 inches.

Unlike entry alarms, floating and subsurface models detect disturbances in the water. Understanding how different pool alarms work helps explain these differences. For homeowners who want an additional layer of monitoring, a pool safety camera can provide visual coverage of the pool area, with some models offering remote alerts and video recordings.

As mentioned above, the S187D only detects the opening of a monitored entry point. It cannot detect someone entering the water or send remote notifications.

Setup and Placement

Standard doors, sliding doors, and gates

Install the alarm unit out of children’s reach; Techko recommends a mounting height of at least 54 inches. Position the magnetic contacts within 1/4 inch of each other when the door or gate is closed. Techko supplies mounting hardware and adhesive and provides installation instructions for different entry types.

Uneven door frames, wide gaps, or sagging gates can complicate sensor alignment. The external bypass button also requires suitable cable routing and placement where adults can reach it but young children cannot. Check the mounting surface, sensor spacing, and cable reach before installation.

After installation, open and close the actual entry several times and follow Techko’s own test instructions. If the alarm is installed on a pool gate, that check should sit alongside routine testing of the self-closing pool gate itself. Confirm that the alarm activates when the door or gate opens. According to Techko’s operating instructions, the siren continues sounding until a bypass button is pressed, even if the opening is closed again. Techko also says that when mounting multiple units, each should be at least five inches from another door alarm sensor.

What the second sensor is for

Techko includes a secondary magnetic sensor for sliding glass doors with a screen door. When both sensor sets are installed correctly, the alarm activates only when both doors are open. This allows the glass door to remain open for ventilation while the screen door stays closed, without triggering the siren.

The second sensor isn’t a second alarm. Techko states that each separate door or window needs its own alarm. Buyers with a back door, a side gate, and a patio slider should plan on three units.

What Is the S187D Like to Use Every Day?

The bypass buttons

The S187D has two bypass buttons: one on the alarm unit and a wired external button for access from the opposite side. Pressing either button temporarily suspends the alarm for approximately 10 seconds, indicated by a blinking LED. Techko’s operating instructions describe an 8-12-second passage window, after which the alarm rearms automatically. If the alarm activates, it continues sounding until a bypass button is pressed.

Two practical issues follow. The bypass must be reachable by adults but unusable by young children, which is a placement decision and the main reason to consider mounting height before installation. A short bypass window can also become tedious if people pass through the door repeatedly, say carrying towels or trays. A household that finds the routine annoying may start propping or defeating the alarm, which removes its value.

Siren, battery, and upkeep

The S187D produces a local audible alert. It doesn’t send notifications, so the alarm only helps if an adult is within earshot and responds. A distant room, a loud TV, or a person wearing headphones all reduce its usefulness.

The unit uses one 9V battery, which Techko says isn’t included. A red LED that stays on indicates low battery. Techko doesn’t publish a battery-life figure in the supplied material, so it can’t be stated how long a battery lasts. A sensible routine is to test the alarm periodically and replace the battery when the indicator lights, but the testing interval is a general practice, not a Techko requirement.

Does the Techko S187D Meet Pool Alarm Requirements?

Techko states that the S187D is ETL-certified and complies with UL 2017, the safety standard covering general-purpose signaling devices, including pool-entry alarms. ETL certification is separate from certification issued directly by UL. Techko provides a process for requesting its UL 2017 compliance certificate, but the certificate wasn’t independently examined for this Techko S187D review.

Compliance with UL 2017 doesn’t automatically satisfy every local pool safety requirement. Acceptance depends on applicable regulations and installation conditions.

A product claim doesn’t guarantee approval for every installation. Alarm and barrier requirements vary by state, county, and municipality, and the local building or pool-inspection authority decides what applies to a specific property.

Before purchasing the S187D, review the CPSC’s pool safety barrier guidelines for additional information on door alarms and pool barriers. Then, contact your local building or pool-inspection authority to confirm whether the alarm meets the requirements for your specific door or opening. Ask for written confirmation before installation.

Who Should Buy the Techko S187D?

The best fit is a household with a specific door, gate, or window it wants to monitor. The opening needs a suitable mounting position, and adults must be willing to press the bypass each time. It suits homes where adults are usually within earshot of that opening and where the family wants a clear, local signal rather than an app-based system. It also fits buyers who want a simple device whose behavior is easy to test.

The S187D is a poor fit for anyone expecting phone notifications, live video, or detection after someone enters the water. Buyers who need those features should compare different pool alarms rather than treating all alarm types as interchangeable. It doesn’t provide those features, and no reviewed listing claims otherwise. Homeowners with large or irregular pool areas should also note that each opening needs its own unit, which can increase costs and leave access points without an alarm unprotected.

Buyer checklist before purchase

  • Check which doors, gates, and windows require alarms under local pool safety rules
  • Plan one S187D unit for each opening that needs an alarm
  • Check the mounting surface and door-to-frame gap for proper sensor alignment
  • Choose bypass button locations that children cannot easily reach
  • Confirm with local authorities whether the S187D meets applicable requirements
  • Verify the bypass duration and siren volume on the actual unit

Conclusion

This Techko S187D review highlights a simple entry alarm designed to alert homeowners when a monitored door or gate opens. Its main advantages include straightforward operation, a loud audible siren, and a secondary sensor for compatible sliding doors. However, it lacks remote notifications and water-entry detection.

The S187D is a practical option for monitoring specific pool access points, provided adults can hear and respond to the alarm. It works best as an additional safety measure alongside physical barriers and active supervision, rather than a replacement for either. Before purchasing, confirm that the alarm meets local safety requirements and is suitable for your intended installation.
